Job Title: UPPER SCHOOL BIOLOGY and CHEMISTRY TEACHER

 

POSITION OVERVIEW

Westminster offers Chemistry in the 10th grade and Biology in the 11th grade. We are looking for candidates who have a strong academic background in biology and chemistry as well as relevant teaching experience. This teacher will work alongside other science teachers to further develop existing curriculum.  

 

The anticipated start date for this position is August 1, 2019.

 

Reports to:  Head of Upper School

 

Position Status:  This position is a salaried, exempt, full-time, regular, 10-month position.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Undergraduate degree in relevant field. M.A. in Biology, Chemistry, and/or professional or practical experience in a scientific field preferred
  • Two years of Upper School teaching experience and a background in integrated studies preferred but not required
  • Proficiency with instructional technology

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach sections of Biology and Chemistry and possibly other sciences depending on the expertise of the applicant
  • Co-teach a 3-week immersive, interdisciplinary class during Jan Term
  • Work directly with other Upper School Science teachers as part of a Science Professional Learning Communities
  • Advise students as part of the Upper School Advisory Program
  • Contribute to the larger school community through coaching or sponsoring other extracurricular programs. Depending on candidate expertise, responsibilities may include robotics, Science Olympiad, or developing curriculum for an existing greenhouse and organic garden

 

In addition to experience and a strong educational background, successful candidates demonstrate a love of working with children, an engaging teaching style, the ability to interact well with parents and colleagues, and a willingness to create and promote an inclusive learning environment.

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle and feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl; talk and hear; engage in moderately strenuous physical activity both indoors and out; and smell. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  Ability to become CPR and First Aid Certified.

 

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.

 

TRAVEL

 

[Travel is primarily local during the regular business day.  Overnight and out-of-area travel may also be required.]
